Joseph E. Day, Esq. (J.D.: Georgetown University Law Center, Bachelor’s Degree: University of Notre Dame) is a shareholder in the Cedar Rapids firm of Day Rettig Martin, P.C. where he concentrates his practice on labor law (public and private sectors), employee benefits, and employment law. Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Day served as a Staff Attorney in the national office of the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, D.C.
Attorney Day is skilled in Collective Bargaining Agreements and Negotiations, both for employees and employers. His expertise in arbitration matters (in excess of 30), interest arbitrations (in excess of 10) and employee/employer negotiations highlights the breadth of his experience. He has undertaken four 10k jurisdictional assignment cases before the National Labor Relations Board.
In a precedent-setting case involving Iowa’s first Project Labor Agreement litigation, Attorney Day successfully represented Kirkwood Community College against the Master Builders of Iowa. He has negotiated contracts on behalf of four different school districts and in one municipality.
Early in his career, Mr. Day served as part-time corporate counsel for the City of Cedar Rapids from 1968 -1975, with Urban Renewal as his primary responsibility. It was at this time when the Five Seasons Center Arena and Hotel, Cedar River Tower, Brenton Bank (now Wells Fargo Bank), the IE Tower, and the 3rd Avenue and 4th Avenue Parkades were constructed. Mr. Day represented the City of Cedar Rapids with respect to those expansive public and private construction projects that still make up the downtown Cedar Rapids skyline.
For over a 20-year period, Attorney Day negotiated Collective Bargaining Agreements in four different states for the then National Propane Corporation. He served as their outside attorney and negotiator in over 15 acquisitions throughout a seven state area.
